<image:caption>Mandela Masanii (AnyXMeans) and Aviva McClure (Our Turn) team up to offer a unique virtual writer’s workshop for High School and College students that has the power to unite and inspire. In this session, Mandela will lead you through activities to create safe space to express personal experiences, trauma, adversity, as well as dreams and aspirations. This workshop is available for both youth and adult leaders as showing vulnerability is not a weakness, but actually models how adversity can be a source of of strength. * By appointment</image:caption>

<image:title>Mission - Why solutions matter…</image:title>
<image:caption>"When we only name the problem, when we state complaint without a constructive focus or resolution, we take hope away. In this way critique can become merely an expression of profound cynicism, which then works to sustain dominator culture” . bell hooks, Teaching Community (2003). Do you remember your classroom experience where desks were facing forward, surrounded by four walls of a school, and the teacher stood at the front? The teacher provided you with information that you were expected to memorize and regurgitate upon demand in tests and worksheets. This method is called the “Banking Model” of education, and a method that Our Turn seeks to confront. Rather, we seek to build upon cultural capital and ancestral knowledge that has better outcomes for marginalized voices (Frier, Paulo. Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 1970). Many educators and practitioners want to learn a new way of leading but don’t know where to start. Steeped in extensive research in culturally relevant approaches, Our Turn offers a solution that enables us to shift power away from the “banking model” and instead reinforce our inherent skills of the “facilitator”: returning to indigenous practices and better outcomes for our community. Our Turn has a roster of teaching artists and experienced practitioners that want to help you develop your practice and offer collaboration & support along the way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mission - Aviva McClure</image:title>
<image:caption>Aviva (she,her/they,them) founded Our Turn as a response to organizations needing to connect with change makers in the arts community for better outcomes. After 20 years working as a K-12 teacher, administrator, artist, and activist; Aviva journeyed outside of institutions to design programs and professional development that move humanity and community development to the forefront. In collaboration with teaching artists and activists, Our Turn seeks to bridge the gaps between social learning, academia, and open spaces. In addition to local ventures in advocacy and K-12 to adult education, Aviva has also developed programs with international partnerships. Out of a desire to promote excellent outcomes for historically marginalized populations, Aviva’s practice aims to include all of us as Leaders.
